AS LONG AS IT STAYS WITHIN A 30 BLOCK AND 600 BLOCK AREA. Your house can be extremely wide with a 3 block high ceiling. (Again not including ceiling or sides, just area within the house) Meaning the smallest suitable NPC house you could have would be 6x5 (excluding ceiling and sides) and the biggest NPC house you could have would be 60 tiles wide by 10 tiles high. It's quite simple, it has to have a minimum total area within your house of 30 blocks and a maximum of 600 (verified on PC version as of 1.2.4).
